On a recent trip to Winter Park Resort we hit the jackpot in gluten free dining options.
Shy of fresh fruit, drinks and bagged items – gluten free choices are rather measly for a person with celiac disease. Let’s face the truth here. During an exerting day of exercise in cold temperatures, who isn’t desperate for a hearty lunch?
We always come prepared, never taking for granted there will be gluten free food or snacks. Skipping a meal unfortunately isn’t an option when also living with type 1 diabetes. The old and familiar foods that I pull out of my backpack quickly become boring choices day after day- especially to an eleven year old.
Last year we loved Winter Park’s potato bar option at the Sunspot Lodge. The giant baked potatoes were individually wrapped in tinfoil ensuring their gluten free status. This year my husband inquired about gluten free options and was presented with this GLUTEN FREE menu – yay!
When I ordered a chicken sandwich “gluten free” I was so thankful to see how the request was handled. The server immediately removed his gloves and put on clean ones. He left the prep space and got the bun which wasn’t stored with its glutinous partners. Another server asked if we wanted cheese and also quickly changed his gloves before finishing off my daughter’s gluten free menu item. The grill had no bread on it and from start to finish the service was celiac friendly and crumb free!
I thanked them up and down, impressed by the beautiful sandwich that caused no stomach upset but a rather HUGE eleven year old grin! The servers never once made me feel like a pain or a freak for putting them to such lengths for a gluten free lunch.
With two lunch selections consumed and no belly aches to hear about – we were really impressed by the Winter Park celiac friendly dining. Thank you and kudos to Winter Park Resort!
