Kids statureAccording to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune “Not all very short kids need screening tests” points out their height may be a normal variant in their development.

The research study followed 235 kids who were short statured but otherwise healthy.  Only one diagnosis was found among those studied and that was significant for undiagnosed celiac disease.  Current endocrinology guidelines call for testing short for statured kids for thyroid, growth hormones and other nutrients.  Testing may include lab work for celiac disease.

“Any patient who really isn’t growing should be checked out… I think parents are most worried that they’re missing something in the kid. It’s actually okay to follow the growth of a patient for six months or 12 months to see if something’s going on before you do specialized testing,” states Dr. Sisley who led the study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

The cost of diagnosis? According to the Journal of Pediatrics, $105,107 per possible diagnosis.  The physical and emotional cost can be even greater with a missed opportunity at diagnosis and actual height potential met.

Keeping in mind, if celiac disease or other autoimmune symptoms run in the family you will want to share your specific concerns with your care provider.  Can celiac disease stunt growth? Yes.  Short stature is a symptom of undiagnosed celiac disease.
