Bread – Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

bread, gluten free, no processed food diet
As the end of our first week on an unprocessed food diet approaches many things come to mind, but they are all overshadowed by one thing – BREAD.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard – “I just need a piece of bread” – I would be rich.

Bread Addicts

I never realized the stronghold bread held in my mind and body.  Ironically enough we are dreaming about a simple slice of gluten free bread – not even the oft-loved glutinous variety.

Conversation revolves around bread now, especially when dinner is approaching and we are all tired and hungry (which is second on my list of things that come to mind – perpetual hunger – which leads me back to bread).

Across the country, I tried to get my Mom (bread addict) on board with this non-processed diet too.  When I checked in with her she told me she had an egg breakfast but was still hungry and had a “small” piece of toast (rule breaker).
Could my love of bread be hereditary? Ha.

Bread Diaries

“What’s so wrong with bread anyhow?” – (It’s processed)
“I’m going to eat a piece tomorrow.” – (I want to too)
“I’m SO hungry Mom.” – (True)
“Why can’t I just have bread?” – (We’re on a unprocessed food diet for 2 weeks)
“I’m breaking this diet tonight.” – (Empty threats)
“I’m slow in the pool Mom, ugh.” – (This is probably true, I’m slow on my bike too unless I eat dried fruit every 20 minutes.)
My husband teases – “Would you just have a slice of bread so I can have a beer?” – (I’m not breaking this first…)

Momisms

I busted out with “you are so lucky you don’t have to walk 15 miles for water and carry it back on your head…
I really don’t feel badly for you the kitchen is full of healthy alternatives.”
This was followed by a large sigh and the bread conversation came to a quick halt.  (Won by Mom!)

My husband has been describing our family as a car to the girls.  It takes four wheels… so when anyone decides to jump ship on this car we have no spares – as we are a family of four…

We’re all still on board, entering week number two and I am sure I need a Vitamix now.  I am ready to pulverize anything I can, make it into flour and bake bread with it.
