I recently had the pleasure of talking about food, type 1 diabetes, playing outdoors and raising a healthy family with my friend Tomas Robison of Plateau Tours. Tomas happens to be one of those people that knows at least one interesting story or fact about everything – I love this about him and so does everyone else.
Here’s what Tomas has to say:
“Food out on the trail, even on day hikes as well as multi-day adventures can be time and budget consuming. Its so easy to make the right turn into fast food hell. But what if you were physically not able to process gluten? What if you had type 1 diabetes which made things all the harder? Where would you go for inspiration and information?
I know a good source, who was gracious to spend time with me on a podcast! Jewels Doskicz who has- and her younger daughter has Type 1 diabetes and Celiac disease. A tough combo 1-2 punch to the gut. But the Doskicz family has developed an interesting system to manage food and energy demand while out hiking in places like the Grand Canyon.
I have my own style of food preparation for back country adventures. 99% of my food is for peak performance, not as crazy as a professional athlete, but I have to be careful not to have just chocolate and peanut butter (as good as that sounds to me). The days that I do need to constantly eat every hour or so are the days where proper meal planning is mission critical.
Listen to this podcast with Jewels. I have two parts where we talk about what it takes to keep the world turning in a mostly circular pattern.”
